3 Concrete Coating Options Worth Considering

by Janet Robinson

Whether you want to coat the concrete floor in your garage or attic, you want to spice up your concrete driveway, or you are tired of looking at an old stained concrete patio in the backyard, there are multiple concrete coating options to consider. Here are three options that should not be overlooked:

Paint

Painting your concrete is an easy way to coat it and create a new look, whether inside or out. Paint is an affordable option that comes in endless colors, so you can achieve the exact design and style you want with or without the help of tools like stencils. You can use flat or shiny paint, opaque or dense. It is always a good idea to choose all-weather paint, but otherwise, your options are almost limitless.

The downside to using paint to coat your concrete is that it tends to break down, fade, and peel away as time goes on. Whether due to foot traffic, vehicles, animals, or simply the weather elements, chances are that you will have to repaint your concrete often throughout the year to keep it looking fresh, clean, and free of eyesores.

Overlays

Concrete overlays will allow you to completely overhaul the look and feel of your concrete flooring without having to do any serious construction work. This type of coating can only be done on any concrete that is of sound condition. Serious cracks and other types of damage can render the overlay useless because it will not fix your flooring problems. However, if your concrete floor is in decent condition or better, a concrete overlay is a great option to consider.

Overlays are typically made by combining sand, cement, polymer resins, and other additives before being applied to concrete flooring. It holds up to wear and tear a lot better than paint, and it doesn't need to be redone regularly. Concrete overlays can last for years without incident and can be made to create all kinds of designs. Overlays can even mimic the look of materials like brick, wood, and marble.

Epoxy Coatings

Another popular option to consider is an epoxy coating. This is similar to paint but is designed to stay in place when a vehicle drives over it or rain pours down on it all day long. It comes in a variety of colors and textures, so you can make your concrete look like it is made of terra cotta or even metal if you want to. Epoxy coatings are thick enough to add extra durability to concrete and will not stain, making them a perfect option for places like the driveway.
