Considerations When Adding A New Floor To Your Bathroom

by Janet Robinson

Anytime you have to replace the current flooring in your bathroom, it is important that you decide upon the correct materials. If you end up choosing improper flooring materials for your bathroom, then the entire project might be a failure. The bathroom is a room that has high humidity, moisture, and will get wet. Therefore, it should be understood that typical flooring options will not be suitable.

This list below is designed to assist you in discovering what materials you should consider for your bathroom.

Selecting the Right Flooring Material

The first step is to make sure you only look at proper flooring materials. As such, hardwood and any sort of non-waterproof materials should not be on your list.

The flooring options that are suitable for your living room or your bedroom are not going to be proper for your bathroom. The high moisture content will destroy the wood and therefore you need to select materials that are water proof or water resistant.

The most common materials will be tile and vinyl. The next section will cover the differences between the two options.

Tile Vs Synthetic

The choice between tile and a synthetic such as vinyl come down to cost and aesthetics. Tile is a classic option and it is a perfect flooring option for a bathroom. You can choose small, mosaic tiles, or larger square tiles. They can be polished, or have a rough texture. The tiles also can come in a variety of colors and designs to match them to your bathroom decor.

Synthetic is also an option. The most common synthetic choice is a vinyl based flooring option. These can be molded to look like regular tile, but you also have the option of vinyl flooring that appears to be wood. This would be the best option for people who would like wood flooring in their bathroom. It has the appearance of wood without having the same susceptibility to water damage.

Use Waterproof Tile Flooring Adhesive

Finally, when it comes time to secure the tile to the flooring, it's imperative that you only use water proof flooring adhesive. If you use a regular flooring adhesive, then the moisture and high humidity will eventually destroy the hold and the tiles will begin to separate.

The tile adhesive might not even set right if the room is too humid and the tiles will end up aligning incorrectly and sliding around instead of being firmly set.
