Cat And Urine Odor In Carpet That You Cannot Get Rid Of? Some Tips To Help You

If you have a cat and it has urinated on your carpet you may be able to get the odor out. This does depend on how long the urine has been there and how quickly you cleaned up the mess after it happened. Below are some tips that you should start with to see if you can make your home smell better. This will allow you to know if it is time to get new carpeting.

Remove Odor

One of the best ways you can remove the urine odor is to purchase an enzymatic cleaner. You can find this at a pet store. This type of cleaning product breaks down the urine crystals making it easier to remove the odor. Follow the directions on the cleaning product you purchase. When finished, use an extracting wet vac to suck up the leftover cleaner. Sprinkle baking soda over the carpet and let sit for 24 hours. After this time vacuum the area. Baking soda can also help remove odor.

Never use a steam cleaner on your carpeting as this will only make the odor much worse. If you do not own a wet vac you can rent one from a local home improvement store.

You may have to do this more than one time, depending on how bad the odor is.

Check Carpet Pad

If you still have this horrible odor on the carpet you need to lift the carpet up and look at the pad underneath. Do this at the edge of the room so you can nail the carpet back down again, if possible. Once you lift the carpet feel the pad and see if it is wet or if you notice odor and stains on it. If the urine got down into the pad it should have a strong urine odor.

If this is the problem then the only thing you can do is to remove the carpeting and pad and have new carpeting installed.

Install New Carpet

When the carpet company lifts the carpet and pad they may find urine stains on the floor boards. If so, they will likely remove these floorboards and install new ones. This is because you can never get urine smell out of any type of wood.

Choose carpeting that has soil and stain-resistant chemicals added to the fibers. This will help liquids, such as cat urine, from penetrating through the fibers and onto the carpet pad. Make sure the carpet company does not simply spray the top of the carpeting with these chemicals. Instead, the carpet fibers should be pre-treated to ensure your carpet is completely protected.

The carpet padding should also be treated with a moisture barrier just in case the urine gets through the carpeting.

To help cut down on how much your cat snags your carpeting with their nails, a cut-pile carpeting would work better than loops.
